Window Lock Buying Advice

Although many people don't think of window locks much, it is actually a very important piece of home security hardware. Your windows are one of the most vulnerable places for someone to enter your home. A window lock can prevent someone from opening your window from the outside. There are different kinds of window locks on the current market:

Window Security Bar:
Window security bar can lock a window closed or secure a window partially open. Add this theft deterrent to your home and enjoy peace of mind by keeping your windows secured.

Sash Window Lock:
This is the most unobtrusive and cheapest way of securing the windows in your home. Sash window lock is used to immobilize the sashes. The method is to use a bolt to pass through both meeting rails. Close the window firmly and drill through the inner meeting rail until you reach the outer rail. Measure the depth of the bolt by marking the drill with tape. Then open the window and tap the two sections, which receive the bolt through the holes in the meeting rails. If the bolt is too long for your particular frame saw its end to make it the required length. Then by closing the window, it should now be possible to insert the threaded bolt with the key until it fits snuggly and flush in the window frame. The keys should always be kept out of reach of the window, to deter burglars and also to stop children from opening the window wider.

Dual Screw Window Lock:
Dual screw is suitable for windows which are not going to be opened frequently. There are two types of dual screws some have a lock-plate for the outer frame; others have barrels for both inner and outer frames. This type of lock is a highly secure device used on a sash window. Once the window is closed, screw the bolt into the barrel with the key.

Cockspur Window Lock:
A cockspur handle secures the opening edge of the casement window to the fixed frame. Old standard cockspur handles can be replaced with new ones that incorporate a lock, for either left or right hand openings. If the original handle is to be retained, use a locking device, which can be screwed to the frame below the handle. Then when the key is turned, an extended bolt will stop the cockspur moving.

Casement Window Lock:
A wooden or metal casement window is normally hinged on one side and fastened to the fixed frame via a cockspur lock or lever. A locking bolt can be attached to the opening part of the wooden framed window. Cut a small mortise in the frame to accommodate the bolt. Screw the cover plate into its position. The method is similar for bolts suited to metal casement window. Sliding Lock: This type of lock is designed for sliding metal framed windows, such as patio doors. It has to be carefully fitted to the window channel to allow for a perfect fit when locking. The lock operates by depressing the button, and can only be released using a key. This is a useful security lock for patio doors, as it stops the doors from being lifted out of their tracks.

Buying Tips:
Window locks can provide you another kind of safety besides door lock and other security devices. Before you buy it, make sure you pick the right module for your home and be that you kids and elder people at home can easily use it. Pay attention to the materials used to make it. It should be strong and the surface should be powdered.
